Prelude Passacaglia Sarabande Vivace
I wrote this piece during a sailing trip of 15 months on the Mediterranean (2004-2005). The piece originated through improvisations that 'solidified' and were eventually recorded on paper.
During this period I have been involved a lot with the solo sonatas and partitas of Bach and together with my great love for baroque music in general, my life at sea and the reflective state in which I found myself during this journey, have led to Fantasy. The Prelude (a fantasy in a minor) is in the style of several preludes for solo violin by Bach. In the Passacaglia I use a bass line consisting of 4 descending notes, which are repeated throughout the piece. True to the Passacaglia form, the bass line first sounds alone after which it is repeated with the upper and middle voices thus building a contrapuntal and harmonic relationship. In the Sarabande and Vivace I also let myself be guided by the principle of Bach's solo partitas.
